Alberto Pera

Alberto Pera is an honorary partner and founder of the Competition and Regulatory Affairs Department at Gianni & Origoni, where he has been a member since November 2000.
He is regarded by industry publications as one of Italy's leading experts on national and European competition law.
He was the first Secretary General of the Italian Competition Authority from 1990 to 2000, overseeing the work of all departments and reporting directly to the President. Prior to this, he served as competition adviser to two Ministers of Industry during the drafting of Italy's first competition law.
He has taught competition economics at La Sapienza and LUISS Universities in Rome and at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.
Since July 2017, he has been President of the Italian Antitrust Association (AAI), which brings together over 60 law firms and economic consultancy firms active in the antitrust and consumer protection sectors.
From 1980 to 1985, he was an economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., and subsequently Chief Economist at IRI (1985-1990).
He has published four books and numerous articles on competition policy, privatisation and regulation.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the European Competition Journal and of Concorrenza e Mercato. He holds a degree in Economics from the University of Rome "La Sapienza", a degree in Law from the University of Macerata and a Master of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics. He is a member of the Rome Bar Association and the Special Register of Cassation Lawyers.
